AC and Ottawa Tourism launch Indigenous Tourism Entrepreneurship Training

Algonquin College and Ottawa Tourism celebrated the launch of Indigenous Tourism Entrepreneurship Training, which will support Indigenous entrepreneurs in the creation and development of their own business and tourism ideas.

Thanks to funding provided by the Canadian Experiences Fund, this partnership will see the creation of 10-week training modules, which will prepare Indigenous learners with the skillset to develop their business and tourism plans, and prepare them to pitch their idea to founders, as well as apply for funding through various agencies.

Andre O'Bonsawin, Director of Indigenous Initiatives at Algonquin College, introduced the launch at The Royal Canadian Geographical Society, stating his excitement for this partnership, and the opportunities it will give to Indigenous entrepreneurs.

“What I am excited about is this idea of imbedding this Indigenous Knowledge into our work at the College, and with our partnerships, such as with Ottawa Tourism,” said Ron McLester, the College’s Vice President - Truth, Reconciliation & Indigenization.
Those who complete this training will be provided with access to a variety of resources provided by Ottawa Tourism, including workshops, networking events, and professional development opportunities.

“We just can’t wait to help local Indigenous Entrepreneurs realize their dreams and potential.” said Michael Crockatt, President and CEO of Ottawa Tourism. “And we are proud to be offering this training free to participants, to remove that cost barrier to participation that is difficult in any year, let alone during a Pandemic.”

The training has already seen 28 Indigenous registrants, and will be offered virtually through the College’s DARE District starting on September 29, 2020. More information on this training can be found here.
