Reminder: End of Life – TechSmith Relay and Replacement by My Mediasite

December 1, 2020
This communication is a follow up to the August announcement of the implementation of My Mediasite, to replace TechSmith Relay, for the creation of screencast presentations and video lessons.

This message confirms that TechSmith Relay will no longer be in use, effective immediately, and the TechSmith web server will be shut down on December 31, 2020. Any content not retrieved by this date will no longer be available to users.

What is TechSmith Relay? What is the TechSmith web server?
TechSmith Relay, previously known as Camtasia Relay, was a software that allowed users to record screencast presentations for the creation of video lessons. The TechSmith web server stored these videos securely for sharing within the college.

Am I impacted by this?
If you have been a recent or regular user of TechSmith Relay (or Camtasia Relay) then yes, you are impacted and will need to retrieve any videos that you intend to keep using.

Also, you may have inherited a course that has TechSmith Relay presentations incorporated into it. Therefore, review your course content thoroughly and check for links to Relay videos. The URL will typically contain “replay.algonquincollege.com” and will also indicate the username of the original creator, e.g. “replay.algonquincollege.com/replay/kershar/...”

What should I do if my course links to TechSmith videos that I did not create?
First, determine whether these videos, or videos covering this content, will be needed beyond December 31, 2020. If so, decide whether you would like to keep the original videos or create updated versions by yourself:
  1. Check whether you are able to download the videos. If so, do this and then go to My Mediasite, log in, and use Add Media to upload the videos to Mediasite.
  2. If you would like to keep the original videos but are unable to download them, create an account on My Mediasite by logging into the site, and then send a transfer request, identifying the original creator’s username and the video links, to ITS (5555@algonquincollege.com).
  3. If you would like to create new versions of the videos, please review the LTS website for My Mediasite training and information.
If you need help with determining how to proceed (i.e. whether to keep old videos or try to replace them with new or updated content) or how to use My Mediasite to create new screencasts, contact Learning and Teaching Services - LTS@algonquincollege.com - to get advice, or set up an appointment through the LTS booking page.
