Restaurant International welcomes Colombian Ambassador and chef

May 19, 2022

Algonquin College culinary students and guests to Restaurant International are in for a tasty treat.

This Thursday and Friday, the College will play host to acclaimed Colombian chef Alex Nessim, who is visiting Ottawa to promote Colombian cuisine. During his visit, the chef will be speaking with students, sharing his knowledge, and be in the kitchen as a guest chef where learners will execute his recipes. He will also conduct an online seminar to broadcast in Spanish through Rogers Latino to the Colombian community.

“We’ve brought a chef in to connect with our students, which is awesome,” said Cory Haskins, Academic Chair, School of Hospitality. “This is such a great win for our students. We are using local ingredients, which opens another educational opportunity and provides new experiences that come with learning about a new region and sharing a new experience.”

Colombian menu items will be added to the Restaurant International menu for the next few weeks, inspired by Chef Nessim’s visit. Dishes include prawn tartar and a Spanish mackerel.

“This is a great way for students to learn about new ingredients from different cultures,” said Haskins.
