myAC Profile: Meet Lindsay Hinds!

What is your role at Algonquin?
My role at Algonquin is Manager, Program Implementation and Operations for the Centre for Continuing and Online Learning. I have been in the role for 7.5 years.
 
Tell us a little bit about what you do.
I manage the budget and operations for CCOL as well as the delivery of continuing education courses and programs to the classrooms that fall under the faculty and schools.
 
Have you held any other positions at the College?
Back in 2001 to Oct. 2002, I worked at Algonquin Technology Institute (ATI) as a Recruitment Specialist.
 
What are you working on now?
Currently we are working on scheduling and loading online and in class courses for Spring 2016.  We are continuing to work on streamlining our document processing operation as we process close to a hundred documents each week. We use a very dynamic and powerful application tool hear at the College called Signority that helps us to do that. 
 
What’s your favourite thing about working at Algonquin?
Working with my staff and my fellow Administrators and the support they give me.  As well as the many friends I have made here.
 
What is your proudest moment at Algonquin?
My first day and being accepted into the Masters of Education Program at St FX.
 
What do you like most about your job?
Every day is different and brings a new challenge.  Like our students, support staff, and faculty, I have the opportunity to learn something new every day.
 
What are your hopes for the future of higher education?
That education becomes more accessible to those less privileged.
 
Before working here, what was the most unusual or interesting job you’ve ever had? 
I worked in a Jewellery store many years ago. You meet some really interesting people with a lot of money, even bags full of cash.
 
What’s one of your favourite Algonquin memories?
Doing the ice bucket challenge for ALS with our CCOL team.
 
Any random facts you’re willing to share with us? 
Lived in Pakistan, El Salvador and in Barbados when I was younger before we moved to Canada.  We are lucky to live in such a beautiful, clean and safe country.

What’s the best vacation you’ve been on?
Venezuela.
 
Do you have a favourite country you’ve visited?
Barbados.
 
Where would you like to travel to? 
“Out East” (Canada) – Nova Scotia or PEI.

Do you have a favorite quote, or a personal motto or mantra? 
It is a popular quote that I try to live by, “It is better to give than to receive.”

If you had to eat one meal every day for the rest of your life, what would it be? 
Cabbage rolls.
 
If your house was burning down, what’s the one non-living thing you would save?
My mother’s picture.

How do you take your coffee? 
Starbucks.

What book did you read last?
“Creating Courses for Adults, Design for Learning”.
 
What kinds of hobbies and interests do you have outside of work?
Getting out on the water and enjoying the outdoors.

What is the most important thing you have learned in the last five years?
Be thankful you have your health, eat well, and exercise. So many people are not so lucky.

What is your favorite sport? / Do you play any sports? Tell us more
I used to play so many sports, not so much anymore.  Nigel Parker is trying to get me back to playing tennis.  Looking forward to that.
 
What’s on your bucket list? 
Playing tennis.
 
What’s your favourite season? Why?
Summer.  You are able to spend more time outdoors and on the water.
